2011 US Open-Prize Money for all participants

US Open has always been revolving around an enthusiastic crowd, great tennis and good prize winnings for all the players participating at this prestigious event

Did you know that everyone who plays at the US Open wins prize money?

Even the players who play in qualifying matches get paid. A first-round player who loses his or her qualifying match gets $3,000. Second-round qualifying losers make $5,625, while third-round losers make $8,000. A total of $1 million alone is up for grabs in just the qualifying rounds.

For the entire 2011 U.S. Open tournament, a total of $23,718,000 is up for grabs to be won by the players. In addition, another $2.6 million can be earned by the top players in the singles events from the Olympus U.S. Open Series bonus money. Any player who is the champion of the Olympus U.S. Open Series and also wins the US Open singles championship will get a $1 million bonus on top of the regular prize money.

Adding in the bonus money, the total prize money is roughly $26.3 million. That includes an estimated $1.3 million players receive per diem for food, hotels and travel expenses.

I've been playing tennis since I was old enough to hold a racket in my hands. I never considered becoming a professional tennis player but seeing the prize money up for grabs at the 2011 U.S. Open makes me think about what if. Tennis players make a lot of money, especially the top players in the game, not only from prize money, but endorsement deals, too.

Prize Money at the 2011 U.S. Open

Singles Play Prize Money for 128 players

The winners of the men's and women's singles titles at the U.S. Open will take home $1.8 million each, plus any bonus money players will have earned from the Olympus U.S. Open Series. Runner-ups in the finals get $900,000 each.

The two players who lose in the semifinals will get $450,000 each, while the four quarter-finalists will earn $225,000 each. The eight losers in the fourth round receive $110,000 apiece, while the 16 third-round losers get $55,000 each.

The 32 players who advance to the second round, but then lose, get $31,000 apiece, and the 64 players that lose in the first round receive $19,000 for showing up.

The total prize money for singles players at the 2011 US Open, not counting the Olympus bonus money, is $16,936,000.

Doubles Play Prize Money for 64 teams

The winning doubles team at the U.S. Open get $420,000 to split, while the runner-up team split $210,000. The two semi-finalist teams get $105,000; the four quarter-finalist teams win $50,000; the eight teams that reach the third round but lose get $25,000; the 16 teams that just reach the second round receive $15,000; and the 32 teams that lose in the first round get $10,000.

The total prize money up for grabs in the doubles competition in the 2011 U.S. Open is $3.6 million.

Mixed Doubles Play Prize Money for 32 teams

The winning team in mixed doubles play at the U.S. Open wins $150,000 to split, while the runner-up team wins $70,000 to split. The two teams that lose in the semifinals receive $30,000; the four quarter-finalist losing teams receive $15,000; the eight second-round losing teams win $10,000; and the 16 first-round losing teams receive $5,000 for showing up.

The total prize money up fro grabs in the mixed doubles competition at the 2011 U.S. Open is $500,000.

One can see why most players concentrate on playing singles—that is where the big money is for tennis players. The prize money is similar for all four Grand Slam tennis events. A decent player who can reach the third round of all four Grand Slams, even if they are no threat to win, can still earn over $200,000 in a year just at the Grand Slam events alone.
