Introduction to Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda yoga is a specific yoga style named after its founder, Swami Sivananda. He is considered as one of the greatest Yoga philosophers during the 20th century, which inspired the establishment of Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. His teachings focus on 6 simple words: service, love, giving, purity, meditation, and realization.
 

It was his disciple Swami Vishnu-devananda who came to the US during 1957 that introduced this concept to the west. It marked the first time that his yoga teachings were observed outside of India. It is somewhat similar to the concept of Hatha Yoga that aim to stretch and tone the entire body. Surprisingly, its teachings and core concepts have remained intact despite years of practice and the worldwide format remains the same. The main objective of the Sivananda Yoga style is to maintain the body's natural healthy state for nourishment and preventive healing.

The Philosophy Behind This School of Yoga Thought
As with any other yoga styles, the goal for Sivananda Yoga is to incorporate the physical, mental and spiritual aspect of the body and merge them into one. There are 5 basic principle to the practice of Sivananda Yoga, which are the following:


* Proper Exercise or Asanas - there are 12 core exercises that are particularly recommended for the practice of this yoga style.

* Proper breathing or Pranayama

* Proper relaxation or Savasana

* Proper diet - adaptation of vegetarian diet is recommended for the Sivananda Yoga style.

* Positive thinking and meditation
