Postgraduate courses at Birkbeck
Birkbeck, University of London is a world-class research and
teaching institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence
and London’s only specialist provider of evening higher
education. Birkbeck provides the highest quality postgraduate
teaching by world-class academics engaged in cutting-edge
research. Over 90% of Birkbeck academics are research-active –
the highest rate for any multi-faculty institution in London.
The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirmed the
College’s status as a world-class research and teaching
institution. Birkbeck entered over 90 per cent of its eligible
staff into the RAE and the College was ranked in the top 25 per
cent of UK multi-faculty institutions. In addition, research in
11 subject areas was rated as internationally excellent and
world-leading, and six subjects were ranked in the top five
nationally. In 2006, Birkbeck was awarded a prestigious Queen’s
Anniversary Prize for excellence in higher education research.
Facilities
Birkbeck is located at the heart of academic London – in
Bloomsbury central London. Within easy walking distance of the
College are world famous research resources such as the British
Library and British Museum. The University of London Library is
next door to Birkbeck and there are other specialist resources
nearby. The completion of our £18.5 million extension has
revitalised the look and function of our main building. The
nine-storey, glass fronted extension houses our award-winning
library (which is open until late), new lecture theatres and a
one-stop student information centre and café.
Taught Courses
Birkbeck offers over 150 taught postgraduate programmes in arts,
science, and social science subject areas.
Almost all of our taught postgraduate courses are available by
part-time, evening study so you can study for a master’s degree
over two years and continue to work and build your career during
the day. However, if you would prefer to study full-time, the
majority of our postgraduate courses can be completed in one
year and are also usually taught in the evenings.
MPhil/PhD Degrees
You can gain an internationally recognised University of London
doctorate at Birkbeck. All of our Schools offer research
opportunities, giving you the chance to pursue your research
with our expert academics – many of whom are renowned,
world-class experts in their fields. We offer both full-time and
part-time research opportunities in over 30 subject areas, all
leading to prestigious University of London MPhil/PhD
qualifications.
